What Are You Still Carrying That God Asked You to Release?
Hello Beautiful,
You cannot fully embrace what is next while holding tightly to what God is asking you to release. Many of us say that we are ready for a new season, but our hands are still filled with the pain, guilt, responsibilities, relationships, and expectations from the previous one. We are praying for God to place something new in our lives while continuing to protect what He has already told us to put down.
Releasing is not always easy because some things have been with us for so long that they have become part of how we identify ourselves. We have carried the disappointment until we started expecting every new opportunity to end the same way. We have carried rejection until we began questioning our value before anyone else had the opportunity to see it. We have carried guilt over decisions God has already forgiven, yet we continue punishing ourselves as though our suffering could somehow repay what grace has already covered.
Some of us are carrying responsibilities that were never ours. We are trying to rescue people who refuse to take responsibility for their own choices. We are carrying the emotional weight of families, friendships, ministries, businesses, and relationships while quietly becoming exhausted. We tell ourselves that carrying everything is proof that we are strong, dependable, and loving, but sometimes what we call strength is really fear. We are afraid that if we put it down, everything will fall apart. We forget that we were never meant to become everyone’s source.
There is a difference between supporting someone and carrying them. There is a difference between loving people and losing yourself while trying to save them. There is a difference between being faithful to an assignment and remaining attached to something God has already ended.
You can love people without carrying the consequences of their choices. You can pray for them without allowing their decisions to control your peace. You can forgive someone without reopening the door that God gave you the strength to close. You can honor what a relationship once meant without forcing it to remain part of your future.
Releasing does not mean it did not matter. It does not mean the pain was not real, the relationship was not meaningful, or the season did not shape you. Releasing means that what happened will no longer have permission to control what happens next.
You can honor your past without making it your permanent address. You can acknowledge what hurt you without building your entire identity around the wound. You can carry the wisdom forward while leaving the weight behind.
Sometimes we continue carrying pain because it feels familiar. We know how to function while hurting. We know how to smile, serve, work, lead, and care for everyone else while quietly carrying something heavy. Healing feels unfamiliar because it requires us to discover who we are without the struggle that has defined us for so long.
There are moments when letting go feels more frightening than holding on. Holding on gives us the illusion of control. If we keep replaying the conversation, maybe we can understand it. If we continue blaming ourselves, perhaps we can prevent it from happening again. If we remain connected, maybe the person will finally become who we believed they could be.
But freedom does not come from controlling the outcome. Freedom comes from trusting God with what you can no longer carry.
Freedom begins when you release what God never asked you to hold.
Before entering your next season, you must be honest about what has become too heavy. Ask yourself whether you are carrying something because it is still fruitful or because it is familiar. Familiarity can make bondage feel safe. It can convince you to remain connected to people, patterns, and places that no longer agree with the woman you are becoming.
Some expectations must also be released. You may have imagined that your life would look differently by now. You thought the marriage, business, ministry, healing, family, or opportunity would happen according to the timeline you created. When life does not unfold the way we expected, we can become so committed to the picture in our minds that we fail to recognize what God is doing in front of us.
Releasing your expectations does not mean giving up on your dreams. It means surrendering your demand that God fulfill them according to your timing and your plan. It means trusting that His direction may look different while still leading you toward purpose.
Put down the guilt God has already forgiven.
Put down the responsibility that was never assigned to you.
Put down the relationship that requires you to abandon yourself to keep it.
Put down the expectation that no longer fits the woman you are becoming.
Put down the pain that taught you something but was never meant to become your identity.
God cannot fill hands that refuse to release what has already ended. Open hands are not empty hands. They are surrendered hands. They are hands prepared to receive what is next.
Beautiful, you do not have to carry everything into your next season simply because it was part of your previous one. Take the wisdom. Take the lesson. Take the strength. Take the evidence that God carried you through.
But leave the weight behind.
Reflection:
What have you continued carrying because it feels familiar, even though it is no longer fruitful?
Are you carrying responsibility for something or someone God never assigned to you?
What would become possible if you finally gave yourself permission to release it?
Today’s Action:
Write down what you are ready to release. Be honest about how it has affected your peace, your decisions, and your ability to move forward. Pray over what you have written, then surrender it to God. You may keep the lesson, but you no longer have to carry the weight.
Prayer:
God, show me what I have been carrying that You never asked me to hold. Reveal every pain, responsibility, relationship, expectation, and burden that no longer belongs in my next season.
Give me the courage to release what has become familiar but is no longer fruitful. Help me stop punishing myself for what You have already forgiven. Teach me to love people without losing myself and to support them without carrying what belongs to them.
I surrender my need to control the outcome. I trust You with what ended, what changed, and what I do not understand. Open my hands, restore my peace, and prepare my heart to receive what You have for me next.
Amen.
There’s More Freedom In You!
