This Birthday Was Different
This Birthday Was Different
Hi Family,
Every year around my birthday, I find myself reflecting on life.
I think about the lessons I've learned, the prayers God has answered, the mistakes that helped shape me, and the people who have walked alongside me through every season. Birthdays have never been just about getting older for me. They have always been a reminder that life is a gift and that every year comes with another opportunity to grow, serve, love, and become who God has called me to be.
This year, however, was different.
Like many years before, I entered this birthday season with plans. I wanted to pour into others. I wanted to continue my 30 Days of Pouring. I wanted to encourage women, share lessons, and help others move closer to their purpose.
But life had another assignment for me.
What I didn't realize was that during this birthday season, my family would be spending precious moments with my mother-in-law as she prepared to take her final breath. Over the last year, we have watched her journey. We have prayed. We have hoped. We have served. We have laughed. We have cried. We have gathered. We have loved. And while it has been one of the most difficult seasons our family has faced, it has also been one of the most beautiful.
One of the greatest gifts I've received during this time has been watching my husband and his brothers care for their mother. I watched them put aside their own schedules, their own responsibilities, and their own exhaustion to make sure she knew she was loved.
As a wife, there are moments you never forget.
Watching a son love his mother until her final breath is one of those moments.
Watching brothers come together in unity is one of those moments.
Watching family choose love over everything else is one of those moments.
It reminded me that at the end of the day, relationships matter more than accomplishments.
Love matters more than titles.
Presence matters more than presents.
And family matters more than anything money can buy.
As I sat reflecting on this birthday, I realized something else.
For years, I have been known as the person who pours into others. I mentor. I teach. I encourage. I pray. I push people toward purpose. But this season reminded me that even those who pour need someone to pour back into them. The calls, The text messages, The prayers, The visits, The encouragement, The support, The love. Every single gesture mattered.
I don't think I realized how much I needed it until it began showing up.
Sometimes God allows us to experience the very thing we've been giving away so we can appreciate it from a different perspective. I thought this birthday would be about pouring.
Instead, it became a lesson in receiving.
Receiving love.
Receiving grace.
Receiving support.
Receiving comfort.
Receiving community.
And honestly, that's a lesson many of us need.
Especially women.
Especially leaders.
Especially those of us who are always the strong one.
Sometimes strength isn't found in what you give. Sometimes strength is found in allowing others to give to you.
As I enter another year of life, I am grateful.
I am grateful for every lesson.
I am grateful for every mistake.
I am grateful for every challenge.
I am grateful for every victory.
I am grateful for every closed door and every open one.
I am grateful for my family.
I am grateful for my spiritual parents.
I am grateful for my business coach.
I am grateful for every person who continues to walk beside me, pray for me, challenge me, and encourage me to keep growing.
Someone recently asked me what I wanted for my birthday.
The answer came quickly.
For the women who have followed my journey, learned from my experiences, and allowed me to pour into them, I want you to invest in yourself.
Too many women wait.
They wait for permission.
They wait for the perfect time.
They wait for more money.
They wait for more confidence.
They wait for someone else to tell them they are worthy.
But growth happens when you decide you're worth the investment. Healing happens when you decide you're worth the investment. Transformation happens when you decide you're worth the investment.
That's why opportunities like the BAM TransformHER Retreat are so important to me. Not because it's another event, but because it's a space where women can pause long enough to hear themselves again, hear God again, and reconnect with the woman they've been called to become.
If you've ever gleaned from me, prayed with me, learned from me, laughed with me, cried with me, or been encouraged by my journey, my birthday wish is simple: Invest in yourself.
This birthday looked nothing like I imagined.
Yet somehow it gave me exactly what I needed.
Perspective.
Gratitude.
Love.
Family.
Community.
And a deeper appreciation for every moment we are blessed to have. So today, I celebrate another year. Not because life has been perfect. But because God has been faithful. And for that, I am truly grateful.
Happy Birthday to Me

Tonya Harden 💜
